Ubuntu 13.04

The new version of the world's most popular free (and open-source) PC operating system, Ubuntu, is now available as a free download from Ubuntu.com. Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" largely contains under-the-hood improvements that most people won't notice, but does contain a few new user-facing features ... such as a more visible notice about how its Unity search feature logs your keystrokes and sends them to websites like Amazon.

What about new features?
The search built into the Unity Dash -- basically equivalent to a Windows PC's Start menu search or a Mac's Spotlight search -- now searches more websites, including the BBC's. There is also now a notice in the search field that it searches websites and not just your computer, and a legal disclaimer that explains that Ubuntu allows Canonical and third-party companies to log your search keystrokes. These were not included when the feature debuted, at which time it also allowed people to accidentally search for underwear sales and pornography.

The new Ubuntu Linux distribution, 13.04, aka Raring Ringtail, is ready to go, and for most users, it may be all the desktop they need.

Ubuntu1304
Say hello to the newest version of Ubuntu.
True, many hard-core Linux users have turned against Ubuntu in recent years. Or, to be more precise, they turned against it when Ubuntu's parent company, Canonical, switched from the GNOME 2.x desktop to its Unity desktop interface. They have a point. Unity doesn't give Linux experts the kind of control over the operating system that they get from desktops such as KDE, MATE, and, my own personal favorite, Cinnamon.
However, Unity is not a user-experience failure like Windows 8's Metro. Instead, it's very good at what it sets out to do: Provide a user-interface (UI) that's easy enough for an 80-year old to use and provide an interface that's designed to work equally well for desktops, tablets, and smartphones. In short, Ubuntu is not for Linux power users, it's for all users.

Ubuntu 13.04: The Linux desktop for everyone (Gallery)
That's very clear in Ubuntu 13.04. While this new version doesn't offer a lot of new features, it has done a nice job of cleaning and speeding up the ones it had. In particular, I noticed how this works on a review system, a 2008-vintage Gateway DX4710. This PC is powered by a 2.5-GHz Intel Core 2 Quad processor, has 6GBs of RAM, and an Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 3100 for graphics. Unity itself was much faster than before on the same box.
That's because Ubuntu spent a lot time making performance improvements to Unity. These include: "reduced memory consumption and a great number of small UI fixes to bring a better overall shell experience. Those are like being typo-tolerant in the dashboard when searching for an application, using the mouse scroll wheel on a launcher icon to switch between applications, or better available third-party device handling."
Of course, if you really want Ubuntu, and you really can't stand Unity, there are a wide variety of Ubuntu 13.04 variants with different desktops. These include: Kubuntu, with KDE; Xubuntu, with Xfce; and Lubuntu, with LXDE.
One change I didn't care for is that Ubuntu versions now only have one workspace available by default. If, like me, you want to more than one workspace, you can add more with the Behavior tab in the Appearance panel of System Settings.
Under the hood, you'll find the Ubuntu Linux kernel 3.8.0-19.29. This, in turn, is based on the 3.8.8 Linux kernel.
For applications, Ubuntu 13.04 supports LibreOffice 4.0 for its office suite. It also includes Firefox 20 for the Web browser and Thunderbird 17 for email. Rather use something else, I'll take Chrome and Evolution for my Web browser and e-mail thank you very much, you can easily get more applications using the Ubuntu Software Center. This is Ubuntu's native app store. I should add that there's a known problem with installing Chrome on Ringtail. This is expected to be fixed with the release of Chrome 28.
One eternal complaint about Linux is that "There aren't any games!" Actually, there always were lots of them. Now that Steam is producing games for Linux in general, and Ubuntu in specific, that canard contains less truth than ever. Heck, Dell will even sell you an Alienware Ubuntu-powered gaming PC these days.

Motherboards these days support boot options and hence, it is necessary to arm our esteemed users the correct method to make one. Although, market is flooded with free softwares which people can use to make these drives, but hardly any one is able to function properly. Hence, it necessitates to tell you an effective, hassle free and effective method so that USB is easily created.

There are many ways to make a bootable USB/Pendrive.Here we will be discussing an easy way and also the old traditional way which is a little complicated method to create a Bootable Pendrive. After making a bootable drive then the process to install windows 8 is very simple.

1.Installing Windows 8 Using WinToBootic:

WinToBootic indeed works amazingly well as it creates pen drive bootable by which windows 8 can be installed without any sort of problems or worries.

Following are the ways to install it:

  • It is important to download WinToBootic and get the program installed
  • Now, as you run the program, there will be a window which will pop similar to what has been show in the figure below
Wintobootic

This is the time when the software is going to detect the thumb drive. If in case it does not, then you need to go to drop down and select your source by clicking on arrow . One thing you need to make sure is that your thumb drive is formatted in NTFS format. It can be easily done at the start of computer (START+E). Thereby, click right on thumb drive. After all, you need to click on format and choose NTFS mode and finally by clicking on “OK” you will format the drive very easily and convincingly as well.
As you drag iso file onto it, it  will look similar to the figure below

windows+8+pro+build
Now, the moment you click “Do it”, there will be a pop up which is shown below. You have to be quite sure that your drive is correct and that every thing is in order as well.

Now, after you click “OK”, the process will start and the software is going to copy Windows 8 to the pen drive.
There are more installing pictures in order to help you understand in a clear and concise way as well.

Hence, you will be able to install windows 8 from the bootable usb drive.

Traditional old Method to create a bootable USB Drive:

You need the following things
4 GB+ USB flash drive
Windows 8 ISO file or DVD
A PC with Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 OS
  1. Now, as all the items are available, you need to access your drive and ensure backup of those files which were previously on the drive
  2. Secondly, you need to Navigate to Start> All Programs> Accessories, thereby click on Command Prompt and finally select Run as administrator. Click on “Yes” if you receive UAC prompt.
run+as+administrator
  1. This specific task can be accomplished as you type “cmd” in the start menu search box along with pressing Ctrl+ Shift + Enter
  2. As soon as the command prompt is up and running in the following way, press enter

  1. The next step is to type in LIST DISK and for checking disk number for your connected USB, you need to hit Enter. In order to help you understand a bit more clearly, I have used my USB drive as “1”. You can crosscheck for the correct drive against their sizes”
diskpart

list+disk

You need to make utmost sure that DISKPART in any case has detected USB flash drive. However, if it has not been detected or you are facing any sort of problem, then the best thing you can do is to reconnect your USB by following the aforesaid steps once again.
Space
Following are the list of commands which you have to run and hit “Enter” after each of them so that it can easily be able to run:
SELECT DISK 1 (your USB disk number might vary)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
(The time varies as it depends on the size of the drive)
 ASSIGN
EXIT

select+disk

Now, you need to proceed towards the next step. You do not have to close the command prompt window.
  1. In order to access the windows 8 ISO file, you have to mount it to virtual drive
As soon as the ISO is mounted, you need to take note of the drive letter for the virtual drive

If in case you have a bootable windows 8 disk, then insert it in cd tray and write down the letter for the drive it leads onto

7. Now, type in the following after re opening the command prompt window
G: CD BOOT and click on enter. (“G” stands out for your DVD drive letter or mounted virtual drive letter)
CD BOOT and click enter.

8. It is almost completed. Now simply type in BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 J: (“J” stands for you USB flash drive letter and it is easily found in explorer) and now simply hit Enter Key
boot

bootsect

9. Now the time has come for you to open Windows 8 cd and you have to copy the content to root folder of your boot USB

my+computer

It is to be noted that in order to boot from a USB, you have to make this option active by going to BIOS settings which is there on the target system.

There is also the second method which will ease you even further.

  • Firstly get the backup of your data to a removable media
  • As it is done, next step for you is to download and run it as administrator.
  • It is the time for you to choose the flash drive which you are looking to make bootable. All you have to do is to select your file system FAT32 or NTFS,  do not forget to “check format box” and also take a note of the “create a bootable disk using Ms-dos”. Finally, you need to also check “create extend label and icon files”.
create+extended+label
  • Now, you have to click on DBD drive logo which is next to option of “create a bootable disk using” and browse 8 ISO file.
  • Finally, as you click on start button, you will get to see a warning window, click ok and windows will automatically start the transfer of ISO files to USB
warning
All you need to do is to configure your Boot options in your BIOS settings and the set up is going to start as you select the Boot first priority to USB HDD.

How to Install Windows 8 on Virtual Box

Windows 8 version performance is very good when compared to its predecessors. If you have not yet downloaded windows 8 then download it for free now from below link.

There are many ways to install windows 8 as follows:

  1. Installing Windows 8 alongside windows 7(Dual Boot).
  2. Installing Windows 8 on virtual box.
  3. Overwriting the current OS with windows 8.
In this article we will see how to install Windows 8 in a Virtual Box, step by step.We will be discussing the other methods in further articles.
Install-Windows-8-On-VirtualBox

Pre-Requisites:

  1. The version I've chosen for the test is Windows 8 Release Preview ISO 32-bit (x86) English.
  2. You can also use other versions as well like Consumer Preview,Developers Preview or even the Professional(Windows 8 PRO) version itself.
  3. VirtualBox (4.1.8) is the latest version which brings a default configuration for Windows 8 .
  4. I assumed the default setting and I only assigned a size of RAM 3GB (out of 12 in the team) and the memory for the virtual graphics card I have placed at the maximum (128 MB). This does not mean it is the best option, which partly depends on the machine but that is how the installation has been done to provide screenshots for illustration. You can also alter the above settings based on your need and configuration.

Installing Windows 8 via Virtual Box:

To avoid problems when you restart the system, the virtual hard disk is the first boot order and image ISO the second.Insert the ISO disk and get started.
1. The first thing you see is a screen that differs from those seen before in other versions of Windows. It appears with a blue screen with stylish LOGO.
2. In the next screen you have to choose Language and Keyboard layout.I hope most of you go with the default settings itself.
Windows+8+language+setup+screen
3. After the selection, click "Next" and got to the point where you start the actual installation.
windows+8+installation

4.In the next page you have to provide a product key to proceed the installation.Windows 8 product key differs for various versions of windows as follows.
Windows 8 Professional Edition Key : XKY4K-2NRWR-8F6P2-448RF-CRYQH  Windows 8 Release Preview Key: TK8TP-9JN6P-7X7WW-RFFTV-B7QPF    Windows 8 Consumer Preview Key: DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J  Windows Server 8 Developers Version Key: 4Y8N3-H7MMW-C76VJ-YD3XV-MBDKV
windows+8+enter+product+key

5.Accept the license agreement and passed the point where we have to make the first decision.
This is very important if you install on a computer that already has an operating system installed, because we will designate partitions.
  • Here I recommend you to choose Custom Installation.
windows+8+upgradation

6. In our facility we have nothing to decide and allocate entire virtual disk (20 GB in the default installation).
windows+8+disc+allocation

7. Now we face the slowest part of the installation, copying files from the image ISO , file decompression, installation of operating system features and updates if any.
windows+8+installing

7. When processing completes, the system restarts automatically after a few seconds, you can control short pressing "Restart now".
8. The system is already installed and after a restart and a succession of black screens with several warnings (Preparing, Getting ready devices, Getting ready system ) and the machine will be restarted again.
9.Next a personalize screen comes out. Here you can choose the theme colour ,PC name.
windows+8+personalize

10. After completing the above process, see the settings screen. We have two options: Express configuration and custom. I selected the first on the characteristics of this test.
windows+8+signup

11. In the next step we have to decide if we want to associate our facility to a Windows ID or not. In the first case, the partnership will allow us to conveniently download apps from Windows Store, access files and photos from anywhere and sync preferences from any computer. The option chosen has been associated with my Windows installation ID.
12. After a while, we can enter the key to that later we can connect with other Microsoft services automatically (Messenger, Hotmail, Xbox Live and Windows Live Services).
If you are using Release Preview version then use this key:MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7
13. Now we will go through three more black screens while syncing with our own and once the process of adjustments, we will be in the Welcome screen .
14. We have successfully finished Windows 8 Installation. The next time you boot the system, if we have an image associated with your account will appear on the Welcome screen.

Fix to Product Key Errors:

Most of them informed me that the Release Preview product key has  been blocked or not working any more. Some of them are getting error after entering the product keys. Here I got couple of solutions to fix the problems during installation.

1.Windows 8 Clean Installation Product Key Do Not Match Problem:

  • We need to integrate the key with Windows 8 installation itself,So that there is no need for checking the BIOS for serial key.
  • Create a text file with name PID.
Solve-Windows-Product-Key-Do-Not-Match-Issue
  • Open it and enter the values as shown in figure below.
  • Here you need to replace the xxxx with your own serial key.
Windows-8-clean-installation-Product-key-mis-match
  • Save the file and copy it to F:\sources. Here F is the bootable Windows 8 Installation disk/Pendrive.

Solution to Error 0xC004F061:

  • Run the registry editor. Press WIN+R then type regedit.
  • Navigate to the following Key entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE.
  • Change the value for ‘MediaBootInstall‘ from 1 to 0.Just double click on the entry to change the value.
  • Open an elevated command prompt. This can be done by opening command prompt as admin.
